Not just iron, bioavailable iron

 

You have probably been hearing a lot of information about making sure your baby gets adequate amounts of micronutrients every day, especially iron, for healthy growth and development.

You have probably been hearing a lot of information about making sure your baby gets adequate amounts of micronutrients every day, especially iron, for healthy growth and development. And that information is spot on. But there is something else you need to know, a complementary piece of the puzzle. You want the iron your baby consumes to be in a bioavailable form. What does that mean? Bioavailable iron means that baby’s body doesn’t just take in the iron the food provides but that his or her body absorbs a higher percentage of it. That means that little goes to waste and, of course, that the intended health benefits are reaped as well. To know: serving iron-rich foods with foods containing vitamin C enhances the body’s iron absorption.

Because baby’s tummies can only hold so much food, the food you give should be packed with vitamins and minerals. Our infant cereals are an ideal foundation for a healthy weaning diet. Iron- and other micronutrient-fortified, they contribute to reaching baby’s daily requirements, including a whopping 50% of your child’s daily iron with enhanced absorption thanks to the vitamin C. And all this in a serving small enough for his or her tiny stomach. Other additional sources of iron are beef and broccoli. The more you know, the easier it is to include this essential building block on your baby’s plate.

Iron is pretty crucial for your baby’s health and development, as are the form you serve them in. If you are concerned that your baby isn’t getting enough iron, make sure you talk to your paediatrician. He is the best person to help you make sure your baby’s first 1000 days are everything they can be nutritionally!
